Artist Statement
Bio
KatMoon is an interdisciplinary artist, filmmaker, and educator whose work moves across digital painting, film, immersive installation, and experimental media. Her career spans costume and theatre, film and television, video production, public television, and teaching—from kindergarten classrooms to college lecture halls, including international work as a visiting lecturer in China.
She holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College, a BA in Film and Television from Regent University, and an associate degree in video, graphic, and web design.
Her practice is rooted in memory, identity, and transformation, using the language of Magical Realism to give shape to grief, resilience, and love. Whether she is leading a workshop or building an immersive installation, the throughline remains the same: a belief that art helps us make sense of what we have lived through and imagine what comes next.
KatMoon lives in Minneapolis with her standard poodle, Bernie.
It all starts like magic. A sudden gush of inspiration, a hymn, a whisper, a dream, or a question arrives, asking to be explored.
I have always been drawn to the space where reality and imagination overlap. Inspired by the traditions of the High Renaissance and Magical Realism, and shaped by my studies with the late Henry Koerner, my work transforms ordinary moments into dreamlike narratives filled with symbolism, mystery, and emotional truth.
As an interdisciplinary artist, I work across painting, photography, digital media, film, and emerging technologies. Rather than committing to a single medium, I choose the tools that best serve the idea. Each work becomes an exploration of memory, longing, transformation, faith, and the unseen forces that connect us.
My paintings are known for their luminous color, theatrical compositions, and layered symbolism. Personal experience often becomes the starting point, but the finished work reaches beyond autobiography into myth, archetype, and shared human experience.
I do not begin with a message. I begin with a vision. The meaning reveals itself through the process, and I invite the viewer to witness what emerges.
